Culver City had been working to update its zoning code utilizing their existing staff for over ten years. As can be the case in many cities, the project just didn’t get the kind of continuity, focus, and undivided attention it needed to get it completed. CSI had an existing contract with Culver City for Planning Services when the City asked for help with their ordinance. As our staff was already working in the City, CSI had a great sense of the process and was able to make many recommendations on ways to update the zoning code. After six months, the zoning code began public hearings, two months later it was approved. A project that had languished in the City for ten years was completed by CSI in eight months. Our involvement had two benefits to Culver City. First, our staff was able to give this project a consistent and focused effort. Second, as we were working as a part of the City staff team already, we had a unique understanding of the City and its code. CSI was able to collaborate with the City staff to develop a hands-on, tailor-made, zoning ordinance update. CSI staff completed the task, resulting in a zoning code that better reflected the needs of the City.
